From the Pen of the Chief

Hello from the Fire Chief of the Missouri State Fair Volunteer Fire Department. I hope everyone has had a terrific spring and how time is flying by. Firefighters Day at the Capitol was very interesting when talking with the Representatives and Senators and thank you to all that attended.

When the magazine arrives the application deadline has ended so I hope that everyone that wanted to go to the fair has submitted their applications. With that being said, as I’m writing there are 116 days until the Missouri State Fair which will be here before we know it.

As the seasoned Missouri State Fair Volunteer Fire Department members know, the station has been sitting idle since August and will need some TLC, and to all the new members, we will have work details day set to give the old station some attention to get her ready for the fair. This year we have added something to help with the new people and the seasoned members.

This year all that will be attending will receive an email and mailed letter with all the information needed for the fair including a letter from the fire chief and other information on where to check-in. This year during the work details we will be adding orientation for the new people and required training with a meet and greet so I hope everyone that has an acceptance letter will be attending a work detail. The work details will be June 23-25, July 7-9, July 21-23, and August 4-6.

To all the new members that have never heard of the Missouri State Fair Volunteer Fire Department, every year we make history because we are the only fully functional numbered fire department in the nation that only covers the Missouri State Fairgrounds when the fair is in fair operations. Every fire apparatus and an ambulance is donated just as your time is donated. If it wasn’t for the outstanding departments and districts allowing the Missouri State Fair Volunteer Fire Department to use their equipment, we would not be able to function as well as the vendors allowing us to use extrication equipment, TICs, and gas meters.

Don’t forget about the convention in Springfield on June 2-4. It is a great place to see friends from all over the state, compete in the firefighters contest, and to have lots of fun so hope to see ya at the convention. Until then be safe and make every day an awesome great day.
